A group of children spends their summer holidays on the island of Aegina. There, they are visited by a family friend from France who works as an assistant to a psychiatrist in Paris. Her mission is to uncover clues from a German patient who suffers from amnesia after stepping on a mine in Aegina during World War II. Scattered words that the children try to piece together to make sense of it all.

Until they visit the Chaldaeus family in Vagia, whose house Hans had stayed in during the war. There, they learn that Hans had stolen gold coins from the family. This sets off a search for a lost treasure, leading the children back to the days of the German occupation and into an unforgettable adventure.
